Admittedly, I am new to the house plant world, having previously believed I could never successfully care for a plant (an idea established by my mother) but nonetheless, I am a huge believer in the benefits caring for plants can provide. For example, house plants are aesthetic and help bring a living space to life (both literally and figuratively). Also, many plants are known to improve air quality, which let me tell you, is imperative to a college dorm.
With this being said, here are some tips to caring for house plants in a college dorm.
First, let me list some plants that are the easiest to take care of:
- Snake plants, water every couple weeks or when the stalks start to fall over whichever comes first, can also be place literally anywhere (they don’t need light)
- Spider plants, water when dry and place anywhere in a room with a window
- Succulents, water when dry, place anywhere in a room with a window
- Pothos, water when dry, place near window, is very cute when hanging
- Any kind of ivy, one of the most resilient plants, water when dry, could be hanging or floor plant (super versatile)
Next, get creative with the pots you put your new plants in. Check out stores such as Lowes, Dollar Tree, Target, Walmart or online such as Etsy or Amazon. There are so many different pots to choose from and this can make a huge difference in the look of your living space.
Overall, have fun with it, get crazy and buy an exotic plant. If a plant dies, replace it with another. But ultimately, enjoy the task of caring for your plants and watch them grow as your education continues.
